TrueNAS platform and Proxmox integration developments

Overview

The TrueNAS storage ecosystem has seen developments regarding both its FreeBSD-based legacy and its Linux-based SCALE platform.

Following iXsystems' decision to move primary development toward TrueNAS SCALE, the open-source community launched FreeCORE. This FreeBSD-based fork of TrueNAS CORE aims to maintain support for technologies such as Jails and the bhyve hypervisor. While the official TrueNAS CORE line was stalled at FreeBSD 13.3, FreeCORE version 15.0 has updated the environment to FreeBSD 15.0 while maintaining OpenZFS support.

Simultaneously, integration with virtualization environments has expanded through a TrueNAS plugin for Proxmox VE. This tool, which has entered beta testing, allows Proxmox VE to use TrueNAS as a native storage backend. By utilizing the TrueNAS API, users can manage virtual machine disks via iSCSI or NVMe/TCP to provision, snapshot, resize, migrate, and delete volumes directly from the hypervisor, improving performance compared to traditional NFS-based methods.
