Trujillo kidnapping of mining businessman sparks gang rivalry claims and political scrutiny

The kidnapping of mining businessman Jenss Lara in Trujillo has sparked political controversy and allegations of gang rivalry. Minister of Justice and Human Rights Ernesto Álvarez Miranda stated that intelligence suggests the abduction by the criminal organization ‘Los Pulpos’ may have been an act of power following Lara’s decision to switch security providers to a rival group, ‘La Jauría’. According to the minister, the family has reportedly agreed to return to the protection services of ‘Los Pulpos’ to ensure Lara’s safe return.

Simultaneously, Congressman Marino Lavado has challenged the validity of recent police operations. Lavado questioned the identification of five suspects detained in connection with the kidnapping and the murder of four of Lara’s companions, claiming their physical characteristics do not match video footage of the attack. The legislator has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Defense, and the General Commander of the National Police, citing concerns over the handling of the investigation and the security situation in the region.
