The incident has triggered a political crisis. Congressman Marino Lavado challenged the validity of the police operations, claiming the detainees’ physical characteristics do not match surveillance footage, and called for the resignation of the Ministers of the Interior and Defense. In response, Defense Minister Rafael Belaúnde Llosa defended the efficiency of the response, dismissing claims that arrests were staged.
