Benjamin Netanyahu pushes Israeli military independence amid US‑Israel tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly urged Israel to reduce its reliance on U.S. military aid and develop an independent arms industry. In speeches to reservists in the occupied West Bank, he said, “We appreciate the support from our American friends, but we need to break free from dependence and build our own weapons network.” His comments came as the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities in the region, a development Netanyahu publicly opposed.

The strained relationship with the United States was highlighted by several reports alleging that former President Donald Trump told Netanyahu, “All the Jews are sick of you,” during a 2025 phone call about a Gaza cease‑fire plan. A 2026 book containing those alleged remarks describes a tense exchange in which Trump warned of a “political divorce” if Israel did not accept the U.S. proposal.

Within Israel, senior political, security and cultural figures – including former prime ministers, former heads of security services and a Nobel laureate – issued a leaked letter demanding legal action to stop what they termed “Jewish terrorism” and an “ethnic‑cleansing ideology” in the occupied West Bank. The letter warned that the government’s policies enable violence against Palestinians and threaten Israel’s security and international standing.

Netanyahu has also invoked a Talmudic principle, “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first,” during a policy summit, prompting criticism that the phrase reflects an aggressive doctrine. Together, these developments illustrate mounting internal and external pressure on Netanyahu’s government regarding Israel’s defense posture and its alliance with the United States.
