Trump administration eyes $42 billion OpenAI stake and tightens AI model controls

The White House is reportedly discussing a possible 5% equity stake in OpenAI, valued at roughly $42 billion based on the company's latest $852 billion valuation. The proposal remains preliminary, with no agreement reached, and would add one of the world’s most valuable AI firms to a growing portfolio of government investments that already includes stakes in Intel, MP Materials and a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

At the same time, the administration is moving to tighten oversight of the most advanced artificial‑intelligence models for national‑security reasons. The policy targets high‑performance systems developed in Silicon Valley, citing examples such as Anthropic’s Fable 5 model. Officials argue that these technologies are strategic assets that require stricter controls to protect U.S. defense and economic interests.
