Trump administration lifts US global tariffs to 15% after Supreme Court blocks earlier tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6‑3 that President Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act when imposing reciprocal tariffs, invalidating a 10% global tariff and prompting the Treasury to issue more than $20 billion in refunds to importers.

In response, the Trump administration announced on Truth Social that the worldwide tariff would be raised from the previously planned 10% to 15% effective immediately, using authority under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. The new levy can remain only for up to 150 days without congressional approval, and any extension would require further legislative action. The move signals the administration’s intent to maintain a hard‑line trade stance despite the court setback, with potential impacts on sectors reliant on imported goods.
