Trump administration negotiates equity stake in OpenAI

The U.S. government under President Donald Trump is in talks with OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman about a possible government equity investment in the artificial‑intelligence startup. The discussion follows an executive order signed in February that calls for a sovereign national wealth fund to invest in strategic technology firms. Under the proposed deal, OpenAI would donate a portion of its capital to the fund, giving the public a stake in the company’s growth. OpenAI, valued at more than $850 billion after its latest financing round, is preparing for an initial public offering that could occur later this year. The administration cites previous federal stakes in companies such as Intel as precedent, but no final terms have been set.
