Trump administration revokes LGBTQ+ protections in U.S. schools

The Trump administration has formally revoked Biden-era regulations that expanded sexual discrimination protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity in U.S. schools. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that the move removes the 2024 regulation from the federal register, reinstating the standards from Trump’s first term which the government has been applying since January 2025.

Under the previous 2024 rules, Title IX was interpreted to protect students and employees in federally funded educational institutions from discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. The decision reverts to 2020 standards, which utilize a more limited definition of sexual harassment and provide different due process protections for accused students.

In a recent White House speech, President Trump reiterated his stance on transgender issues, specifically targeting the participation of transgender women in female sports. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to prohibit transgender girls and women from participating in female school sports.
