Trump announces massive economic warfare campaign against Iran

President Donald Trump has announced an unprecedented economic warfare and isolation campaign against Iran, which he described as an ‘economic D-Day’. The initiative aims to force Tehran to end its nuclear program and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the strategy involves a combination of economic isolation and a US naval blockade. The administration intends to target various financial activities, including oil smuggling, cash transfers, exchange houses, and the use of front companies. Bessent also issued a warning to allies and third-party nations, threatening secondary sanctions against any country or entity that continues to conduct business with Iran.

Key commercial partners of Iran, including China, Turkey, and Iraq, face increased scrutiny. China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil, importing approximately 1.38 million barrels per day in 2025. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the measures as ‘economic terrorism’ and a diversion from domestic American issues.

Details regarding the specific implementation of these measures are expected to be further clarified by the US Treasury in an upcoming press conference.
