Trump cryptocurrency interests spark ethics debate and poll concerns

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,166 U.S. adults reveals significant public concern regarding President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency interests. According to the survey, 69% of respondents believe his private business interests influence his presidential decisions, while 63% consider it inappropriate for Trump and his family to have profited from crypto since returning to the White House.

Financial disclosures from 2026 indicated that Trump earned over $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency ventures, including World Liberty Financial, making it the largest source of disclosed presidential income. While the White House has rejected allegations of conflicts of interest, stating the president acts in the public interest, the poll highlights a partisan divide; approximately 70% of Republicans viewed the crypto dealings as appropriate, even though nearly half of Republican respondents felt business interests sway his decisions.

These findings coincide with legislative efforts in Congress. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has proposed an ethics provision within the CLARITY Act that would prohibit sitting elected officials and their spouses from issuing or promoting digital tokens. This provision is currently identified as a major obstacle to the bill's passage, with prediction markets placing the odds of the CLARITY Act passing at roughly 25%.
