Trump claims Iran has virtually abandoned nuclear weapons plans

US President Donald Trump stated that Iran has ‘virtually given up’ its plans to develop nuclear weapons. These remarks come as the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran enters its eighth month, following initial military strikes launched on February 28, 2026.

Trump also noted that global oil prices have begun to decline following the period of volatility caused by the conflict. He emphasized that the US continues to monitor Iran's nuclear activities closely, asserting that any future diplomatic steps will depend on receiving sufficient guarantees regarding Tehran's nuclear program.

In response to Trump's claims, Iran's permanent mission in Vienna rejected allegations that its nuclear facilities were being used for drug production, labeling the assertion a ‘big lie.’ The mission noted that its facilities are under continuous monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also reiterated that the country does not seek nuclear weapons, citing religious prohibitions and offering to dilute enriched uranium under international verification.
