Trump says Iran cease‑fire over, but the United States will keep talks alive
On July 10, 2026 U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iran had asked to continue negotiations and the United States had agreed, but that the cease‑fire agreed in June was “OVER.” He quoted, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!”
The statement came after three commercial tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. strikes on Iranian military sites and Iranian missile‑drone attacks on U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. The fighting has raised fears for the crucial oil chokepoint, sending West Texas Intermediate crude up more than 7 percent and sending global equity markets lower.
Washington also unveiled a new round of sanctions, designating Dubai‑based financier Ali Ansari and several Iranian exchange houses as entities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and senior regime figures. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the sanctions would “continue using every tool at its disposal to isolate” the leadership.
Technical talks on the nuclear issue and other implementation points of the June 17 memorandum of understanding are reportedly still under way, with Qatar and Saudi Arabia acting as mediators, while diplomatic officials say the United States is prepared to resume military action if needed.
