Trump engages in diplomacy and talks with Yemen leaders over Houthi escalation

President Donald Trump has engaged in high-level communications to address escalating tensions in Yemen and the Red Sea. In a telephone conversation, Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi requested American support for the Yemeni government to counter Houthi advances. While the U.S. administration has provided intelligence and target identification, it has not committed to direct military strikes, despite reports that Trump recently canceled imminent airstrikes against the group.

Simultaneously, the Trump administration has reportedly entered into direct contact with Houthi representatives via Oman. These discussions in Muscat aim to contain escalation and ensure the security of maritime navigation, specifically regarding U.S. vessels in the Red Sea. The Houthis have indicated they do not intend to target international or American ships, though disputes continue regarding vessels linked to Saudi Arabia.

The situation remains critical as Houthi forces seek to control strategic highlands to isolate the Red Sea coast. This conflict poses significant risks to global energy supplies and international trade through the Bab al-Mandab strait. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continues to face missile and drone attacks, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also seeking American military support to defend Saudi interests.
