President Donald Trump has established a “committee of inquiry” to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on mortgage documents. The committee, composed of three Trump appointees—Kevin Hassett, Keith Sonderling, and Andrea Lucas—is tasked with determining if there is sufficient “cause” to remove Cook from her position.

A closed-door hearing is scheduled at the White House for November 5. During this session, Cook will be permitted to present evidence, witness statements, and arguments, and may be questioned by the committee and Department of Justice representatives. Following the hearing, Cook has until November 10 to submit a final written statement before the committee provides its findings and recommendations to the president.

This move follows a June Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Cook, which blocked a previous attempt to fire Cook on procedural grounds, stating she must be given an opportunity to respond to allegations. Cook and her legal team have denied all wrongdoing, characterizing the claims as baseless and the process as a potential threat to the independence of the Federal Reserve.
