Inquiry into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook
Overview
President Donald Trump has established a three-member “committee of inquiry” to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on 2021 mortgage applications regarding primary residences in Michigan and Georgia. The committee, consisting of Kevin Hassett, Keith Sonderling, and Andrea Lucas, is tasked with determining if there is sufficient “cause” to remove Cook from her position.
Cook and her legal team have denied all wrongdoing, characterizing the claims as baseless or as inadvertent notations, noting she has not been charged with a crime. Her attorneys have further characterized the White House inquiry as “demonstrably biased.”
A closed-door hearing was originally scheduled at the White House for November 5, where Cook was to be permitted to present evidence and testimony. However, attorney Abbe Lowell stated that Cook cannot attend the November 5 hearing due to official monetary policy meetings in Europe. Lowell indicated the earliest Cook could appear before the panel would be after the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on December 8-9.
Following any hearing, Cook has until November 10 to submit a final written statement before the committee provides its findings to the president. This process follows a June Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Cook, which required that Cook be given an opportunity to respond to allegations before removal. The ongoing dispute has prompted concerns regarding the independence of the Federal Reserve from political influence.
