Trump-Putin Anchorage summit fails to yield lasting peace in Ukraine

One year after the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, the so-called ‘spirit of Anchorage’—intended to foster dialogue and end the Russian offensive in Ukraine—has failed to materialize. The meeting, held on August 15, 2025, at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, marked a departure from previous Western isolation policies toward Russia.

While Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the discussions as a ‘compromise proposal’ to end the war, details remain vague. According to political analyst Sergey Markov, Moscow sought a lasting peace by addressing security concerns such as NATO expansion and arms control. The proposed Russian compromise involved limiting territorial ambitions to the Donbas region, provided that Kyiv and Washington recognized new borders and lifted US sanctions.

However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified in June 2026 that while a proposal was made in Alaska, it never became a formal agreement. Subsequent mediation efforts involving a 19-point document negotiated between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv failed to reach a conclusion, and hostilities between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate.
