US-Russia diplomacy regarding Ukraine conflict

In August 2025, President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin met at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. This summit, intended to foster dialogue and move away from Western isolation policies, resulted in a ‘compromise proposal’ where Moscow reportedly sought to limit territorial ambitions to the Donbas region in exchange for the recognition of new borders and the lifting of U.S. sanctions.

By mid-2026, the peace efforts appeared to have stalled. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified in June 2026 that the Alaska discussions never became a formal agreement. Subsequent mediation attempts involving a 19-point document between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv also failed to reach a conclusion.

In July 2026, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the United States of failing to fulfill commitments made during the Anchorage summit. Speaking in Manila, Lavrov stated, “we probably need to understand who exactly failed,” and argued that Washington had changed its position following the talks. While Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s interest in a political-diplomatic settlement, hostilities between Russia and Ukraine have continued to escalate.
