Donald Trump says US‑Iran cease‑fire ended as negotiations continue

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will keep talking with Iran after Tehran asked to continue negotiations, but he declared the cease‑fire established in April to be over. Trump posted on Truth Social that “Iran asked us to continue the talks – we agreed – but the cease‑fire is OVER.”

Iran’s foreign ministry denied any request for talks, stating it only welcomed a Qatari mediator’s visit. Governments of Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and others have held phone calls with both sides to try to curb the renewed exchange of attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Central Command said recent strikes were in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping, while Iran reported retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and the Gulf.

Washington also imposed fresh sanctions on Iranian financier Ali Ansari and on exchange houses alleged to move billions for sanctioned banks, linking the sanctions to Iran’s “errant” attacks on Hormuz. U.S. officials are demanding a public Iranian pledge that all channels of the strait remain open and that no ships be targeted. Diplomatic talks are slated for Oman, while the risk of the cease‑fire collapsing into a broader regional conflict remains high.
