Trump signs executive order giving US agencies early access to advanced AI models

President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order that permits U.S. federal agencies to review the most powerful artificial‑intelligence models up to 30 days before they are publicly released. The original draft called for a 90‑day review period, but industry officials persuaded the White House to shorten it. The order creates a voluntary pre‑launch review process focused on cybersecurity risks and designates “covered frontier models” for special scrutiny. It also calls for an AI Cybersecurity Clearinghouse to collect vulnerability information. While agencies can flag concerns, the order gives them no veto power and imposes no penalties on firms that choose not to participate.

OpenAI became the first major AI company to pledge compliance, joining others such as Anthropic in supporting the measure. White House officials described the step as a “common‑sense” approach to balance innovation with national security. The order represents the second Trump administration’s first substantive AI policy framework.
