Trump tariffs linked to inflation and low public support
A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that President Donald Trump is facing record-low public support ahead of Congressional elections, driven largely by concerns over inflation and the economy. Many respondents identified import tariffs as a primary cause of rising prices. Among Republicans, 64 percent believe the administration bears responsibility for price increases, while 76 percent of those without party affiliation hold the same view. Additionally, 54 percent of all respondents reported that their costs have increased significantly over the past year.
Complementing these findings, an analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York suggests that consumer prices in the United States might have declined if not for the implementation of President Trump’s tariffs. The analysis highlights how trade policies impact household purchasing power and the broader economy. While tariffs are intended to protect domestic industries and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, the New York Fed notes that they can increase production expenses for American manufacturers who rely on imported raw materials and machinery, ultimately passing those costs on to consumers.
