Trump's BBC defamation suit sparks discovery battle over Jan. 6 records

President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British broadcaster BBC. The BBC has responded by seeking extensive discovery, including Trump’s phone logs, calendars, schedules, diaries and other communications covering the period from the 2020 election through January 20, 2021.

Legal analyst Aaron Parnas described the situation as an “unintended consequence,” noting that the suit could expose the former president to detailed scrutiny of the months surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Trump’s lawyers argue the requests are overly broad, while the BBC says the material is necessary for its defense. The court’s decision on the scope of discovery remains pending.
