TS-LKD party to initiate political process for universal conscription in Lithuania

At a recent convention, the Lithuanian Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) party announced plans to initiate a political process for the introduction of universal conscription. Party leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas stated that the move is necessary to ensure national security and create a resilient defense foundation against regional threats from Russia.

While the military leadership has noted that current recruitment levels are sufficient, public support for universal conscription is high, with recent polls suggesting approximately 76 to 80 percent of the population favors the measure. The party emphasized a strategy of total defense, focusing on prepared reserves and a ready society.

In addition to defense policy, the convention focused on preparations for the 2027 local elections. The party is finalizing its municipal programs and candidate lists. Liberal leader Čmilytė-Nielsen also addressed the gathering, calling for political maturity and cooperation between liberal and conservative forces regarding Lithuania’s Western orientation and security.

The event included international guests, such as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, and featured the presentation of the ‘Lithuanian Oaks’ awards to individuals who have served the country’s independence.
