TS-LKD political activities in Lithuania

The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) are engaged in several political initiatives in Lithuania. The party has begun preparations for the 2027 municipal elections, confirming 30 mayoral candidates across various regions and launching open primary elections in Kaunas to select a specific nominee.

In addition to local election preparations, the party is initiating a political process to introduce universal conscription. Party leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas framed this proposal as a response to regional military threats, stating the move is necessary to ensure national security and create a resilient defense foundation against threats from Russia. While military leadership suggests current conscription levels are sufficient through 2030, public support for the measure is high, with polls suggesting approximately 76 to 80 percent of the population favors it. The party is emphasizing a strategy of ‘total defense’ focused on prepared reserves and a ready society.

During a recent convention, the party also focused on finalizing municipal programs and candidate lists. Liberal leader Čmilytė-Nielsen addressed the gathering, calling for political maturity and cooperation between liberal and conservative forces regarding Lithuania’s security and Western orientation. The convention featured international guests, including former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, and included the presentation of ‘Lithuanian Oaks’ awards.
