TSE suspends removal of Maxaranguape mayor and vice-mayor

A Superior Electoral Court (TSE) justice has suspended the removal of the mayor of Maxaranguape, Professora Nira, and her vice-mayor, Evanio Pedro. The decision by Justice André Mendonça allows the pair to reassume their positions while their defense's special appeal is pending a final ruling.

The original mandate revocation was issued by the Regional Electoral Court of Rio Grande do Norte (TRE-RN) following allegations of economic and political power abuse during the 2024 elections. The case involved the alleged distribution of construction materials, such as bricks, tiles, and cement, to vulnerable voters to secure political support.

Justice Mendonça noted that the removal of the administrators before a definitive analysis of the appeal could be premature. He highlighted factors such as the relatively small number of families involved in the process and the significant electoral margin—nearly 20% of valid votes—held by the duo over their opponents. This ruling reverses the recent interim administration led by City Council President Daya Sobrinho.
