Tsinghua University researchers develop solid-state battery for −40°C

Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have developed an experimental solid-state battery capable of operating at temperatures as low as −40°C. Typically, extreme cold hinders ion movement in solid-state cells, reducing efficiency and functionality.

To overcome this, the research team incorporated a conductive substance called polyaniline into the material. This addition modifies the distribution of electrical charges, allowing a higher number of lithium ions to move effectively even as temperatures drop. In laboratory tests, the material operated between −40°C and 45°C, with some cells exceeding 13,000 charge and discharge cycles. While these results are promising for small-scale laboratory prototypes, further verification is required to transition the technology to larger, real-world applications.
