Solid-state battery development for extreme temperatures
Overview
Research and development efforts are advancing in solid-state battery technology designed to function in extreme cold.
In China, researchers at Tsinghua University developed an experimental battery using polyaniline to facilitate lithium-ion movement at temperatures as low as −40°C. Laboratory tests showed the material could operate between −40°C and 45°C, with some cells achieving over 13,000 cycles.
In the United States, NASA’s SPEARS project is developing solid-state batteries for lunar exploration. These prototypes, utilizing ceramic or polymer electrolytes, have demonstrated successful operation at -80°C and showed no physical damage at -170°C. This technology aims to support future lunar missions, such as the Artemis program, by providing power for rovers and scientific instruments in environments where liquid-based batteries would freeze.
