Paraguay prepares for municipal elections on October 4

Paraguay is preparing for municipal elections on Sunday, October 4, to elect mayors and municipal council members for the 2026-2031 period. In the Misiones department alone, 104,718 voters are eligible across 306 polling stations and 33 locations, with San Ignacio hosting the largest number of electors.

The Superior Tribunal of Electoral Justice (TSJE) has established strict rules for election observation. Civil organizations linked to opposition candidates Soledad Núñez and Bruno Defelippe are barred from acting as national observers due to accreditation deadlines and regulations requiring impartiality. The TSJE maintains that observation missions must be independent of political candidates or activists. International monitoring will be provided by groups including the Organization of American States (OAS).

To facilitate the process, the TSJE has provided voter guidelines, noting that elections will run from 07:00 to 17:00. Voters must present their civil identity card, and the system utilizes electronic voting machines that print a bulletin for verification before the vote is cast.
