Tsukui Yamayuri-en facility holds security drills ahead of 10th anniversary

In preparation for the 10th anniversary of the mass killing at the Tsukui Yamayuri-en facility, the Tsukui Police Station conducted a security training exercise at the Sagamihara-based facility on July 17. The drill, which is the fifth of its kind held since 2022, simulated an intruder entering the premises. Staff practiced verbal warnings, emergency reporting, and physical restraint, while officers practiced questioning and apprehension techniques using shields and batons.

Reflecting on the 2016 incident where 19 residents were killed by a former employee, discussions continue regarding social changes and disability discrimination. A seminar titled ‘Has Society Changed 10 Years After the Yamayuri-en Incident?’ is scheduled for September 16, featuring journalist Hiroki Narita, to examine the ongoing impact on education, welfare, and the rights of people with disabilities.
