Italy deploys thousands of new buses via PNRR funds

Italy is implementing a large-scale modernization of its public transport network using funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has deployed over 3,000 new electric and hydrogen buses across 55 Italian cities as part of a 2.09 billion euro national initiative.

Regional updates include:

- Lombardy: 591 new buses are arriving in 11 provinces, including Milan and Bergamo, representing an investment of approximately 371.5 million euros. - Piedmont: 387 new buses are being introduced in cities such as Turin, Alessandria, and Novara, with an investment of roughly 240.9 million euros. - Sicily: 325 new buses have entered service in Palermo, Catania, and Messina, totaling an investment of about 222.9 million euros. - Campania: 315 electric buses are now operational in the provinces of Naples and Avellino, supported by an investment of 185.8 million euros.

In addition to bus fleets, other infrastructure projects are underway, such as a 40 million euro fund for sports facilities in Sicily and planned railway upgrades on the Messina-Catania-Siracusa line to improve safety and resilience.
