Tua public transportation service expansion

Overview

Tua has reported significant growth in its public transportation services following the first anniversary of several key routes. The Lanciano–Pescara–Ancona railway line transported over 50,000 passengers in its first year, while the La Verde trolleybus service saw more than 2.1 million passengers between September 2025 and September 2026. Due to these results, the company is evaluating new railway connections to other regions.

Building on this service expansion, Tua announced a 5 million euro investment to renew its bus fleet for the L’Aquila-Rome route over the next 18 months. The plan includes the introduction of 12 new vehicles, including Setra double-decker buses and Yutong electric buses, to improve comfort and sustainability. These new vehicles will feature advanced technologies such as Wi-Fi, USB ports, and video surveillance, complemented by the development of digital services like the TUA GO app.

Tua’s fleet renewal is part of a broader national modernization of Italy’s public transport network. Funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is overseeing a national initiative to deploy 3,238 new buses across 55 cities, totaling approximately 2.09 billion euros.

As of late September 2026, this national deployment has seen over 3,000 new electric and hydrogen buses introduced across the country. Significant regional progress includes Lombardy, which is receiving 591 buses through a 371.5 million euro investment; Piedmont, with 387 buses totaling roughly 240.9 million euros; Sicily, with 325 buses totaling about 222.9 million euros; and Campania, where 315 electric buses are now operational following an 185.8 million euro investment.
