Warsaw kindergarten tuberculosis outbreak triggers investigation

An epidemiological investigation is underway in Warsaw after a tuberculosis outbreak was detected at a kindergarten in the Białołęka district. The outbreak was identified following a diagnosis of infectious (smear-positive) tuberculosis in an employee, which subsequently led to the identification of one child with non-infectious tuberculosis and three other children with latent infections.

Sanitary authorities have identified 24 children who had documented contact with the infectious employee and have referred them for diagnostic testing at the Mazowieckie Center for the Treatment of Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis in Otwock. As of the latest reports, 12 children have been examined and discharged, four remain hospitalized, and others are scheduled for testing. A second group of children with less direct contact is also being prepared for screening.

The facility has undergone multiple sanitary inspections and underwent disinfection of rooms and toys, with plans for additional ozonation. Health officials emphasized that latent infections and non-infectious cases do not pose an epidemiological threat to others. "Działania podejmowane wobec osób z kontaktu są standardowym elementem postępowania epidemiologicznego" (Actions taken toward contacts are a standard element of epidemiological procedure), stated Katarzyna Dziurna, spokesperson for the Provincial Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Warsaw.
