Tucson downtown shooting injures ten, suspect also wounded
Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 19 2026, a gunman opened fire in the 100‑block of East Congress Street, a busy entertainment district in downtown Tucson, Arizona. Police on foot patrol heard the shots, chased the suspect and, after issuing repeated commands, an officer shot the gunman. The suspect was taken to a hospital with life‑threatening injuries.
Nine other victims, all adults, were hit in the arms or legs and were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition. No police officers were injured and no fatalities were reported. Mayor Regina Romero said, “A shooter recklessly began shooting in a crowded area, striking nine people before being stopped by a Tucson Police Officer.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office is leading the criminal investigation, while the Tucson Police Department will conduct its own internal review. The incident added to ongoing debate over Arizona’s gun‑safety laws.
