Tucson downtown mass shooting
Entities: Tucson Police Department · David Leroy French · Regina Romero · Empire Pizza and Pub · Pima County Sheriff's Office
Overview
On the early morning of July 19 2026, a male gunman opened fire on East Congress Street in downtown Tucson, wounding nine adults in the arms and legs. Police on foot patrol responded, pursued the shooter and, after issuing commands, an officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect. The attacker, identified as 21‑year‑old David Leroy French, was taken to a hospital in life‑threatening condition; the victims were also hospitalized and are expected to recover.
French had previously received probation for a 2024 rifle‑fire incident at a car wash and was serving that probation at the time of the shooting. He now faces nine counts of aggravated assault, and prosecutors noted an earlier felony conviction at age 19. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office and Tucson Police Department continue their investigation, with findings to be reviewed by the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
Mayor Regina Romero condemned the attack, praised the rapid police response, and called attention to Arizona’s weak gun‑safety laws. Both law‑enforcement agencies have launched internal reviews of the incident.
The case remains under active investigation, and legal proceedings against French are pending.
