Tucumán earthquake of magnitude 5.0 strikes northwest Argentina
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the province of Tucumán in northwestern Argentina during the early hours of Sunday, September 20. According to the Instituto Nacional de Prevención Sísmica (INPRES), the tremor occurred at 5:47 AM with a depth of 197 kilometers. The epicenter was located in the Trancas department, near Cafayate and Burruyacú.
The earthquake was felt by residents in several provinces, including Salta and Santiago del Estero. Many people in Tucumán reported being woken by the movement, particularly those living in buildings and apartment towers where oscillations of furniture and lamps were noted.
Due to the significant depth of the earthquake, no casualties or material damages have been reported. This event followed another seismic movement recorded 15 minutes earlier at 5:32 AM in Catamarca, which had a magnitude of 4.3 and a depth of 205 kilometers. Authorities have advised the population to remain calm and follow established safety protocols.
