Seismic activity in Chile and Argentina

Overview

In early September 2026, seismic activity was recorded in both Chile and Argentina. A magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred in Chile’s Antofagasta Region, while a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Antofagasta de la Sierra, Argentina, at a shallow depth of 6 kilometers.

On September 20, two earthquakes struck northwest Argentina during the early morning hours. The first, a magnitude 4.3 tremor, occurred near Angastaco, Catamarca, at 5:32 AM at a depth of 205 kilometers. Approximately fifteen minutes later, at 5:47 AM, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near Trancas in the province of Tucumán. The Tucumán earthquake, which had an epicenter in the Trancas department near Cafayate and Burruyacú, occurred at a depth of 197 kilometers. According to the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (INPRES), the significant depth helped mitigate surface damage, though the seismic waves were felt strongly in residential areas and high-rise buildings in San Miguel de Tucumán and Yerba Buena. Residents reported swaying furniture and lamps, and vibrations were also felt in the neighboring provinces of Salta, Santiago del Estero, and Catamarca.

On the morning of September 22, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the La Rioja province at 06:21 local time. The epicenter was located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Aimogasta at a depth of 143 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Catamarca, San Juan, and Córdoba. In Famatina, intensity reached level IV on the Modified Mercalli scale, while other areas like Aimogasta and Chilecito recorded intensities between III and IV. No injuries or major structural damages have been reported from these recent events.
