Tudela Cathedral unveils new LED ornamental lighting
The Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor in Tudela has debuted a new exterior ornamental lighting system designed to enhance the visibility of its facades, portals, and towers at night. The project was driven by the Fundación Iberdrola España in collaboration with the Cathedral Chapter and the Tudela City Council.
The renovation replaces an old high-pressure sodium vapor system with state-of-the-art LED technology. The number of luminaires has increased from 52 to 112, while total power consumption has dropped from 12,250 watts to 7,875 watts, representing an energy saving of over 36%.
The new lighting uses a warm 2,700 Kelvin light to respect the monument's historical character. Special emphasis is placed on the Puerta del Juicio, a significant Spanish medieval sculpture, using grazing light techniques to highlight its Romanesque-Gothic reliefs. Other areas receiving focused illumination include the Puerta de Santa María, the Puerta de la Virgen, the towers, and the head of the temple.
