Northern Cyprus marks 52nd anniversary of Taşkent massacre

Commemorations were held across Northern Cyprus to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Taşkent, Terazi, and Tatlısu massacres, as well as the liberation of Serdarlı and Famagusta. At the Taşkent Martyrs' Monument, high-ranking officials, including President Tufan Erhürman, attended ceremonies to honor the 89 Turkish Cypriots killed in August 1974.

During the ceremonies, President Erhürman criticized the European Parliament for what he termed a “scandalous decision” and a “double standard,” noting that while resolutions have addressed Greek Cypriot losses, the suffering and losses of the Turkish Cypriot community have been ignored. He emphasized that the community will continue to defend its rights on all international platforms.

Additional ceremonies took place at the Muratağa-Sandallar and Atlılar shrines, where Erhürman honored the 126 victims of those massacres. In Serdarlı and Famagusta, local officials held events to celebrate the liberation anniversaries, including wreath-laying ceremonies and cultural performances.
