Tufan Erhürman sends letters to UN, EU, and Barcelona over diplomatic obstructions

Tufan Erhürman, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has sent three separate letters to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta. The letters address what Erhürman describes as attempts by the Greek Cypriot leadership to obstruct Turkish Cypriots in diplomatic, cultural, and sporting spheres.

A primary catalyst for the correspondence was the cancellation of a planned football training camp by the FC Barcelona Academy in Northern Cyprus. The camp, intended for youth aged 6-18, was reportedly cancelled following pressure from the Greek Cypriot side and the Football Association, which involved consultations with UEFA and the Spanish Football Federation.

In his messages, Erhürman argues that these actions deepen mistrust between the two communities and undermine the UN's efforts to establish peace. He called for an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people, citing previous UN reports and decisions by the Council of Europe. Erhürman emphasized that Turkish Cypriots are equal to Greek Cypriots and will not accept being made 'invisible' on the international stage.
