Tukes investigates strong odors in squishy toys
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has investigated several squishy toys following numerous reports regarding strong odors. Testing focused on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phenols, which can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
While the chemical concentrations found were not high enough to trigger market surveillance actions or pose an immediate health risk according to current EU-wide findings, researchers noted a significant difference in packaging. Toys stored in airtight packaging contained ten times more volatile substances than those in non-airtight packaging.
Tukes advises that if a squishy toy has a strong smell, it should be left to ventilate in a well-ventilated area before use to allow chemicals to dissipate. Additionally, authorities warn against heating these toys in microwaves, as reported incidents of burns from heated fillings have occurred. Broken toys should be disposed of properly, and contact with internal liquids or fillings should be avoided.
