Shahed drone flight triggers security alerts in Moldova and Romania
A Shahed-type drone triggered significant security alerts in Moldova and Romania on September 8. The drone entered Moldovan airspace from Ukraine at 16:20, traversing the Transnistrian sector and moving toward the Ungheni district. After exiting Moldovan airspace near Zagarancea, it entered Romania near Iași county.
In Romania, the Ministry of National Defense detected an aerial target 18 km north of Roman at 16:47. This prompted RO-Alert extreme warnings in Iași, Vaslui, Neamț, Botoșani, Suceava, and northern Tulcea counties, advising residents to seek shelter. Iași International Airport temporarily suspended all flights during the incident. Two Spanish F-18 aircraft from the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base were deployed to monitor the situation.
Following its passage through Romania, the drone reportedly returned to Moldovan airspace, appearing near Drochia before crashing in a field near Mihăilenii Vechi in the Râșcani district. The crash caused four fire outbreaks in dry vegetation, though no injuries were reported. Authorities have secured the crash site for investigation.
