drone incursions airspace violation Romania Moldova RO-Alert

Multiple drone incursions and airspace violations have been reported in Romania and Moldova amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In Romania, the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) detected a drone in national airspace southeast of Sulina for approximately one minute on the night of October 14-15. This incident prompted the scrambling of Spanish F-18 aircraft from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base and Romanian F-16 aircraft from Fetești Air Base. Authorities issued multiple RO-Alert messages to residents in Tulcea County, advising them to seek shelter or stay away from windows due to potential drone incursions. Additionally, a vessel flying the flag of the Comoros caught fire near Sulina; while a drone attack was suspected by some, Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that a drone strike has not been proven and technical investigations are ongoing. No personal injuries were reported from the vessel fire.

In Moldova, the Ministry of Defense recorded four unauthorized drone flights in its airspace during the night of October 15-16. The drones entered from the direction of the Odesa region in Ukraine, affecting areas such as the Ștefan Vodă district. The flights lasted between one and 20 minutes, with the longest duration being approximately 18 minutes. The incursions occurred during a period of massive Russian attacks on Ukraine.
