Tulum implements recovery plans to boost tourism and infrastructure

Tulum is implementing new strategies to recover from a significant downturn in tourism, following a summer where coastal hotel occupancy dropped to 15 percent. The municipal tourism office is now promoting inland destinations, such as the Cobá ruins and various cenotes, to diversify the visitor experience and mitigate the impact of the low season.

As part of the federal 'Plan Tulum Renace' introduced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, several measures have been enacted to improve accessibility and affordability. These include free entry to Parque del Jaguar for Mexican visitors, reduced admission fees for archaeological zones, and the creation of new public-access points on beaches to address long-standing complaints regarding hotel privatization of the coastline.

In addition to these federal measures, the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council (CHCM) is calling for improvements to local infrastructure ahead of the winter high season. Key priorities include establishing a more efficient public transportation system to connect the airport with the city and coast, implementing transparent and digitalized taxi fare systems to reduce tourist complaints, and upgrading Highway 307 with better pedestrian crossings and speed controls.
