Tulum sea turtle conservation faces milestone and investigation

The Riviera Maya-Tulum Sea Turtle Conservation Program has reached a milestone, successfully releasing over 20 million hatchlings into the Caribbean Sea over the past 30 years. Since 1996, crews have protected more than 303,000 nests along 120 kilometers of coastline, including the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve. Biologists note that the return of adult turtles to their natal nesting beaches serves as evidence that depleted populations are rebuilding.

However, recent incidents in Tulum have raised concerns regarding hatchling survival. Authorities in Tulum have launched an investigation after dead sea turtle hatchlings were discovered on the sand near Playa Pescadores and, in a separate incident, several lifeless turtles were photographed inside a garbage container at a commercial plaza. The municipal Ecology office is reviewing security footage and seeking information from plaza administration to determine the cause of death and how the animals ended up in the trash.
