Tulum tests sargassum‑derived bioasphalt to patch roads amid record seaweed influx
A record buildup of sargassum in the Caribbean for the 2026 season—estimated at up to 40 million tons across the region and about 90 000 tons in Quintana Roo last year—has prompted action in Tulum, Mexico. Researchers at the Instituto Mexicano del Transporte are experimenting with turning the algae into a bioasphalt for repairing potholes and surfacing low‑traffic rural roads, aiming to reduce reliance on petroleum‑based products and improve connectivity for isolated communities. Earlier laboratory trials showed some performance gains but also raised concerns about heat resistance and softening under tropical conditions.
At the same time, Tulum municipal official and businessman Jorge Portilla has asked state and federal authorities to declare an environmental and social contingency, arguing that the seaweed surge is hurting tourism, lowering hotel occupancy and threatening the local economy. He seeks coordinated response and additional resources to address the problem from its source in the open ocean.
