Tumbler Ridge mass shooting: Court documents reveal police confusion

Released court documents reveal initial confusion among RCMP officers regarding the number of shooters involved in the February 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Due to conflicting names received during the response, police initially believed there were two attackers at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

The documents, obtained through a court challenge by a media consortium, identify the shooter as Jesse Van Rootselaar. The attack began at a residence where Van Rootselaar killed her mother and brother before moving to the school, where five schoolchildren and an education assistant were killed.

Additionally, the records show that RCMP sought an order from OpenAI to obtain data related to the shooter’s ChatGPT accounts, though the agency clarified that OpenAI itself was not under investigation.
