The records reveal significant initial confusion among RCMP officers and investigators regarding the number of attackers. Conflicting reports, including a 911 call describing a black SUV with damage and two bodies, led authorities to believe there might have been two shooters at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

The documents identify the sole shooter as Jesse Van Rootselaar, who died from a self-inflicted wound. The attack began at a residence, where Van Rootselaar killed her mother, Jennifer Jacobs, and brother, Emmett Jacobs, before moving to the school. The total death toll reached eight people, including six children and two adults.

Investigation findings noted that Van Rootselaar had mental health issues and a fascination with firearms. Additionally, records indicate that the RCMP sought an order from OpenAI to obtain data related to the shooter’s ChatGPT accounts.

The RCMP had received a complaint regarding a Hyundai Palisade being driven erratically near the suspect's family home. The vehicle, which was registered to Van Rootselaar’s mother, was reported to have sustained rear damage after striking a snowbank.
