Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, pioneering Malaysian doctor, dies at 100

Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, a pioneering Malaysian physician and public health advocate, passed away at the age of 100 on September 28, 2026. She died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur. Her death was confirmed by her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.

As the wife of Malaysia’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, she was a prominent public figure known for her contributions to maternal and child health, family planning, and rural healthcare. She was among the first generation of Malay women to enter the medical profession, graduating from the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1955.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that she would be accorded a state funeral with full honours. Her remains were interred at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya during a ceremony attended by family, government ministers, and members of the royal family. The funeral proceedings included military and police honors, reflecting her significant service to the nation.
