Death of Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali and aftermath

Overview

Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, a pioneering Malaysian physician and public health advocate, passed away at the age of 100 on September 28, 2026, at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur. As the wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, she was a prominent figure recognized for her work in maternal and child health, family planning, and rural healthcare. She was among the first generation of Malay women to enter the medical profession, graduating in 1955.

Following her state funeral and interment at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya, public tributes have continued. Visitors have been arriving as early as 7:00 AM to offer prayers, such as reciting Surah Yasin, staying until the cemetery gates close at 10:00 PM. Some younger visitors noted they first learned of her through her appearance as a character in the animation series ‘Upin & Ipin’.

K Divya Barathy, the head nurse who cared for the couple for five years, shared that Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah expressed gratitude to the medical team just one day before her passing, reportedly remarking that “it was time for her to go” and thanking the staff for their service to both her and Tun Dr. Mahathir. Observers have remembered her as a role model for women, noting her ability to balance family life with her husband’s leadership roles.

Following her death, former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, aged 101, was admitted to the IJN for medical observation. His son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, indicated the hospitalization was intended to allow doctors to monitor his father during this stressful period. The medical team has continued to provide support to Tun Dr. Mahathir during the mourning period.
