Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s first post-handover leader, dies at 89
Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong following the 1997 handover from British to Chinese rule, has died at the age of 89. His office announced that he passed away peacefully on Tuesday in the presence of his family.
A former shipping tycoon and head of Orient Overseas Container Line, Tung was selected by Beijing to lead the territory. His administration was marked by significant challenges, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the SARS epidemic in 2003, and large-scale protests triggered by attempts to implement Article 23 national security legislation.
Tung resigned from his position in March 2005, citing health reasons, and subsequently served as a Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He was a prominent figure in implementing the ‘one country, two systems’ principle during Hong Kong's transition period.
