Tunisia launches electric taxi subsidy program

Tunisia is advancing its national e-mobility program through a pilot project targeting individual taxi drivers. The National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has selected 23 taxi drivers to receive a direct subsidy of 10,000 Tunisian dinars for the acquisition of 100% electric vehicles.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the initiative aims to test the viability of electric propulsion in real-world urban conditions. The program seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower operating costs for drivers facing rising conventional fuel prices. Beneficiaries are required to use the vehicles as taxis for at least five years and must report electricity consumption and mileage data every six months.

The program includes drivers from various regions, including the Grand Tunis area and several coastal and interior governorates, to ensure diverse territorial coverage.
